The Role of the Web; The Role of Multimedia on the Web

BARTON POLOT

T

he World Wide Web has certainly been a mainstay of our professional and personal lives for at least a decade. A more recent development has been the significant increase in users whose access to the Internet is high-speed, not just in our schools but in our homes and the homes of our students. This increase has fostered, in turn, an evolution in the Web itself, with an increasing number of sites willing to feature engaging interactivity and rich, bandwidth-busting media. Such media represent new opportunities for music teachers and music students.

Steven Estrella, keynote speaker for the 2005 Michigan Music Technology Conference, is an expert on the Web. Formerly Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Media Services at the Temple University School of Music, Dr. Estrella is currently head of his own company that develops Web sites and interactive media for clients such as TI:ME, NAMM, McGraw-Hill, and the Berklee College of Music. He will address dual themes: The Role of the Web in Music Education, and The Role of Multimedia on the Web. In addition to his keynote address, Dr. Estrella will present hands-on sessions on Website development for musicians and on multimedia creation using Flash.

The Washtenaw Intermediate School District will again serve as host and co-sponsor. Previous attendees know these facilities to be an ideal setting for this high-tech event. Its conference rooms are versatile and are wired for audio, video, distance learning and connectivity. Its computer laboratory maintains PCs and Macintoshes for instruction and hands-on exploration. Parking is ample, on-site, and free.

We are quite pleased to continue our collaboration with Lentine's Music of Akron, Ohio. Lentine's maintains a powerful commitment to music education technology. Not only will they be providing computers, synthesizers and clinicians to the Michigan Music Technology Conference on January 20, Lentine's will also be sponsoring and maintaining MSBOA's Hands-on Room at the 2005 Michigan Music Education In-Service Conference (MMEIC) January 21-22.

The year 2005 marks the fourteenth annual Music Technology Conference, and will be the last conference in the current format. With the MMEIC moving to Grand Rapids in 2006, the Music Tech Conference will adapt accordingly. Our exciting plans for the 2006 Michigan Music Technology Conference will be announced at the 2005 session.

Expect to see a conference brochure in your mailbox shortly. In it you'll find a complete list of events and presenters, directions, and a registration form. Please register early and tell your colleagues and friends. Registration, including lunch, costs just $35.

The Michigan Music Technology Conference is Thursday, January 20, 2005, from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The conference is presented by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) in cooperation with the Michigan Music Educators Association (MMEA) and the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA). It is sponsored by the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD) and Lentine's Music with generous support from SoundTree.
