Oakland County Teachers Plan Music Technology Workshop

ANDREW DABCZYNSKI

ith eyes and ears toward the latest in music education software, the Oakland Schools Fine Arts Advisory Council will present a special workshop, "Music Technology: Novice to Advanced," on Thursday, October 24, 1996, from 3:15 to 7:00 P.M. at Farmington Harrison High School.

Under the auspices of the Oakland Intermediate School District, the workshop will provide an opportunity for teachers to learn about some of the most popular and effective music education software currently available. In concurrent sessions which will be repeated throughout the afternoon, workshop participants will receive an introductory overview and then have an opportunity for "hands-on" exploration of various music technology products. The wide range of sessions scheduled for presentation include introductions to Overture and Finale music notation software, user-friendly MIDI sequencing using Cakewalk and Band-in-a-Box, and the Vivace accompaniment system. A variety of publishing, management, and organizational software, such as ClarisWorks, PageMaker, and PowerPoint, will also be demonstrated.

Paul Barber, Music Coordinator of the Farmington Schools and the primary organizer of the workshop, is excited about the upcoming event. "We plan to provide many different music technology experiences which will appeal to every music teacher, no matter whether he or she has a lot of technology background or none at all," he said. "And with ample opportunity for a workshop participant to 'play' on the software in one of the two computer labs that will be available, everyone should leave feeling relatively confident about their ability to use at least one or two titles once they get back home."

Hedy Blatt, Music Supervisor in Troy, and I are helping to coordinate the workshop. Jennifer Davidson of the Oakland I.S.D. has done much to support the event.
