SVSU Conference to Focus on Technology in Music Teaching

MARC PERETZ

On Saturday, September 27, 1997, a conference on Technology in Music Teaching will be held at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). Co-sponsored by SVSU, the Michigan Music Educators Association, the Michigan School Vocal Music Association and MSBOA, the conference plans call for demonstrations of some the latest Macintosh and Windows hardware and software for music educators and other musicians, hands-on labs, workshop-style sessions and exhibits. The keynote address will be given during the conference luncheon. Final details, including the names of presenters and exhibitors will be shortly forthcoming.

The conference will be housed in SVSU's West Complex and the Arbury Fine Arts Center. West Complex, opened in January 1997, houses the acoustically superior Rhea E. Miller Recital Hall, a theatre, conferencing center with break-out rooms, computer labs and has state-of-the-art communications capability. The Arbury Fine Arts Center, attached to West Complex by an indoor pedestrian walkway, is the home of the University Fine Arts Computer Lab and the nationally-known Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery. Ample free parking is available for conference participants adjacent to West Complex.

At 7:30 p.m. on the evening of the conference the first concert of the 1997-1998 Rhea Miller Concert Series, an endowed visiting artist series, will take place. Robert Conway, pianist, will perform in the Rhea E. Miller Recital Hall. Conway, the pianist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, is well known for his collaborations with such composers as Elliot Carter, George Crumb, and Gunther Schuller. Conway will present a program that will include a performance of William Albright's Sphaera, for piano and computer-generated four-channel tape. Conference participants will be able to receive free tickets to this concert.

The SVSU campus is eight hundred acres of beautiful, quiet wooded land conveniently located near Interstate-75 in the heart of the Tri-Cites of Saginaw, Bay City and Midland. The University has negotiated a special room rate and service at three nearby hotels: Bay Valley Resort Hotel, Hampton Inn and Four Points, Saginaw. Special arrangements can be made for shuttle service to the University.

Effective June 1, updates concerning the conference and registration materials will be available on the World Wide Web at www.svsu.edu/techmusic
