MSBOA Music Technology Conference 2000

James Faulconer (jhfaulconer@ou.edu), Chair of the Music Technology Department at the University of Oklahoma, is Professor of Music Theory and Composition and Director of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Center for Music Theory Pedagogy. He is the author and arranger for Music with MIDI published in by McGraw Hill, New York, 1995-2000. This eight-volume set of textbooks, now in 2nd edition, is the acknowledged industry standard for the exploration of traditional musical concepts using MIDI technology in general music education, and is in use in school systems throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has more than one hundred thirty-five published arrangements and original compositions in current distribution by companies including McGraw-Hill, Intera Publishing, Bonesteel Press, DBH Productions, OU Percussion Press, and Contemporary Oboe Press. Many of these pieces are available with professional recordings or MIDI files. He is a co-founder and former co-editor of the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, a professional journal with subscriptions from the major libraries of the world. Dr. Faulconer is the arranger and orchestrater of the musical drama, Jack, by Will Holt and Tom Sawyer. His original music for film has won twenty-four regional, national, and international awards including a "CINE, Golden Eagle." Professional recordings of his published and commissioned compositions and arrangements are included on seven CD albums by artists such as The Carillon Brass, Pat Boone, Bob Snyder, David B. Hooten, The Oklahoma Woodwind Quintet, The University of Oklahoma Percussion Ensemble, and "Witness." He is the author of more than a dozen published articles in scholarly publications including The Journal of Research in Music Education, International Music Education Yearbook, CMS Proceedings, and NASM Proceedings. Topics of his published works include the aural perception of music, curriculum design in higher education and the implementation and impact of MIDI technology on music and music education. Dr. Faulconer considers one of his most important professional specialties to be the application of MIDI technology to music educational situations at all levels.

The Ann Arbor Digital Music Consort is an all-digital performing ensemble that plays music of all styles on digital instruments. Their repertoire ranges from music of the Medieval period through the 20th century including newly commissioned works. The group has performed successfully throughout Michigan since 1995 to critical acclaim and to enthusiastic audiences, including the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the University of Michigan.

Paul Barber (Paul.Barber@farmington.k12.mi.us) has been a music educator in the Farmington Public Schools since 1966. He currently serves as Director of Fine Arts,

Ann Doyle (adoyle@internet2.edu) serves as Internet2 Manager for Arts and Humanities Initiatives. She has been a featured speaker at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters' annual conference in New York, the Internet Society's Annual Conference in Stockholm, the Los Angeles Museum Educators Consortium, and numerous U.S. campuses interested in the application of Internet2 in performing arts and humanities education.

Marjorie Haber (haber@westbloomfield.k12.mi.us) teaches music technology full time in the West Bloomfield School District. During the five years she has taught music in West Bloomfield, she spearheaded a music technology initiative, including the design and construction ofthree music tech labs in the high school and middle schools.

George Hess (george.hess@cmich.edu) is Associate Professor of Music Technology at Central Michigan University. He has presented clinics and workshops on music technology and instructional design throughout the country.

Mike Lorenz (mlorenz@sienahts.edu) is Professor of Music at Siena Heights College. He is the developer of Audio Comp, a new technology for audio compression for the coin-operated industry.

Bob Phillips (phillipsfiddlers@aol.com) has taught orchestra in the Saline Area Schools since 1976 and is known for developing strategies for large group heterogeneous string instruction which include extensive use of new technologies. He is the author of the String Explorer, Fiddlers Philharmonic and Jazz Philharmonic series, the founder of the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic and has presented clinics extensively around the US and abroad.

Barton Polot (bpolot@schoolcraft.cc.mi.us) is director of music technology at Schoolcraft College. He is a leading clinician and consultant, is the author of several CAI music programs, and is editor of MSBOA's Michigan MusicTech.

Raymond Riley (rileyr@alma.edu) is professor of music at Alma College. He teaches courses in MIDI composition, digital recording techniques, and multimedia development.

Alex Ruthmann (saruthma@oakland.edu) is Coordinator of Music Technology at Oakland University. He is also Director of Education for Fm7, Inc., manufacturer of the MIDIPartner system, and serves as a technology consultant to the new Silver Burdett Ginn "Making Music" textbook series.
